Target compatibility is build-dependent. DecodePHP attempts recognized compatible builds and does not accept ionCube PHP 7.0 or 8.0 targets.

File signature

An IonCube 15-encoded PHP file opens with a header that looks like:

Encryption scheme

IonCube 15 introduces the strongest encryption scheme in the series: per-section keys plus a new AEAD-style authentication tag over each section. Any modification to encrypted bytes fails authentication and aborts loading.

Obfuscation techniques IonCube 15 uses

  • Property-hook opcodes (new in PHP 8.4) — hooks compiled as embedded lambdas with separate encrypted sections
  • Asymmetric visibility flags split across multiple header fields to resist reconstruction
  • Lazy-object initialization opcodes compiled to deferred-evaluation patterns
  • Strongest variable-name mangling in the series, with collision-aware renaming

Anti-tamper

AEAD authentication tags per section. The old CRC approach is gone. Modifying a single byte of encrypted payload breaks the tag and the Loader refuses to execute.
